Becky – off the Wall!

Becky Newman - Great Wall of China Marathon 2013It was the hardest race I’ve ever run. An unrelenting and unforgiving course that seems to slope upwards all the way. The first six miles are up a steep mountain road then it’s onto the wall. After 5000 knee-high steps you join the uphill mountain roads again for a giant sixteen mile loop.

Lots of the local Chinese line the route which is lovely, especially the children who are keen to high-five as you run
by. At mile 22 runners are sadistically directed back onto the wall to climb the 5000 steps all over again. We were like 2500 zombies crossing the Chinese countryside.

I can’t believe I did it in six hours, there were long stretches where I walked and was full of self-doubt. There was
a lot of congestion on narrow strips of the wall which slowed runners down. It felt like I was out there for 10 hours! I’m glad I did it but it was BRUTAL! Nice to be home again.

Pub quiz a big success!

HSWL quiz nightHSWL  ran a pub quiz at The Bricklayers Arms in Putney Weds 21 November 2012 which raised over £2000.

The pub landlady (and HSWL trustee) Becky Newman was the perfect host, providing fabulous nibbles and first free drink to guests – thereafter £1 for every drink bought was donated to HSWL.

The quiz included a smell round in test tubes and was hosted by quiz master Keith Hawley who has worked extensively in Neuro Rehab services for the last 30 years and came all the way from the Peak District to support the charity.

Congratulations to the Just Costs team who the quiz and kindly donated their £100 prize money back to HSWL!

As well as the quiz we also ran a raffle, with prizes such as tickets to see Manchester United play at Old Trafford. The tickets were donated by Nestor Partnership, and won by Mark at Just Costs who is a Liverpool supporter so put the prize back in for auctioning which raised £160!

Special thanks to Becky, Keith Hawley, Nestor Partnership, Forths Forensic Accountants, Just Costs, 9 Gough Square, and various other friends and work colleagues who supported us on the night.
