HSWL’s Becky Newman gets national recognition

North Pole MarathonCongratulations to Becky Newman, trustee of HSWL, who has been named as one of only three people from across the UK competing for the title of Campaigner of the Year in the annual awards run by Headway UK!

Becky ran the North Pole marathon in 2012 and raised almost £9,000 for Headway South West London. Not content with that, Becky also plans to run the Great Wall of China Marathon and the South Pole Marathon in 2013, while 2014 will see her taking on the infamous Marathon des Sables. It’s a 180km run across the Sahara Desert and generally considered to be the toughest foot race on Earth.

The Campaigner of the Year will be named at a glittering ceremony at The Dorchester Hotel in London on 7 December, along with awards for the Volunteer, Carer and Achiever of the Year, and the Stephen McAleese Outstanding Contribution to Headway Award.

April 2012 was a marathon fundraising month for Headway South West London

North Pole Marathon
North Pole MarathonFirst up was Becky Newman who bravely took on a North Pole Marathon for HSWL on 5 April. Becky completed the marathon – in temperatures of -30 degrees – in just 6 hours 11.minutes and 39 seconds and has so far raised more than £5000! Becky said: “Taking part in the North Pole marathon was one of the best adventures of my life, made even better by the thought that I was helping Headway SW London who do such amazing work. I was completely bowled over by the goodwill I received from the Putney community. I also met fantastic runners at the North Pole. We’re all planning doing The Great Wall of China marathon next year and it will be an honour to run for Headway again” . Headway South West London would like to say a massive thank you and congratulations to Becky. You can still donate.

London Marathon
Our second marathon success came from Headway South West London trustee, Rachel Allan, who completed the London Marathon on 22 April in aid of HSWL. Talking of her epic run, Rachel said “It was a hot and sunny morning which brought supporters out in their thousands to cheer us on. There was a great atmosphere but 26.2 miles is still a very very long way to have to run. Completing it in 4 hrs 50 is hardly record breaking, but I’m really proud of myself for completing it and I’ve raised around £1900 for Headway. It’s not too late to donate.”
