Pub quiz a big success!

HSWL quiz nightHSWL  ran a pub quiz at The Bricklayers Arms in Putney Weds 21 November 2012 which raised over £2000.

The pub landlady (and HSWL trustee) Becky Newman was the perfect host, providing fabulous nibbles and first free drink to guests – thereafter £1 for every drink bought was donated to HSWL.

The quiz included a smell round in test tubes and was hosted by quiz master Keith Hawley who has worked extensively in Neuro Rehab services for the last 30 years and came all the way from the Peak District to support the charity.

Congratulations to the Just Costs team who the quiz and kindly donated their £100 prize money back to HSWL!

As well as the quiz we also ran a raffle, with prizes such as tickets to see Manchester United play at Old Trafford. The tickets were donated by Nestor Partnership, and won by Mark at Just Costs who is a Liverpool supporter so put the prize back in for auctioning which raised £160!

Special thanks to Becky, Keith Hawley, Nestor Partnership, Forths Forensic Accountants, Just Costs, 9 Gough Square, and various other friends and work colleagues who supported us on the night.

John takes on the Grim Challenge in aid of HSWL!

Grim Challenge for HSWLHSWL supporters certainly do like to take on big challenges to fundraise for us. We are very honoured that one of our supporters, John Sykes, will be tackling the Grim Challenge on 2 December in order to raise money for HSWL.

HSWL is a cause close to John’s heart: “I am running the Grim Challenge this year to help raise much needed funding for Headway South West London who provide help and support to my son Robert who had a stroke last year and now has brain damage which restricts his speech and cognitive thinking.

Since we found Headway SWL, Robert has made good progress in his recovery and looks forward to the monthly meetings with his new friends at Headway SWL.”

You can support John, and HSWL, by donating online.

HSWL’s Becky Newman gets national recognition

North Pole MarathonCongratulations to Becky Newman, trustee of HSWL, who has been named as one of only three people from across the UK competing for the title of Campaigner of the Year in the annual awards run by Headway UK!

Becky ran the North Pole marathon in 2012 and raised almost £9,000 for Headway South West London. Not content with that, Becky also plans to run the Great Wall of China Marathon and the South Pole Marathon in 2013, while 2014 will see her taking on the infamous Marathon des Sables. It’s a 180km run across the Sahara Desert and generally considered to be the toughest foot race on Earth.

The Campaigner of the Year will be named at a glittering ceremony at The Dorchester Hotel in London on 7 December, along with awards for the Volunteer, Carer and Achiever of the Year, and the Stephen McAleese Outstanding Contribution to Headway Award.
